Video Teaching

How-to teach Your Child with Autism to Ride a Bike

Do you struggle teaching your child to ride a bike?  Well watch this video and read this blog post and learn.  The main teaching strategies are:
  1.  Learn to "glide" by pushing with both feet while sitting on the bike (read the blog post to know what bike is best for this).  Tristan shows in the beginning of the video.
  2. Next step is the "scooter"-- the child's dominate foot is on the pedal and the other foot is on the ground pushing like a scooter.  The dominate foot then automatically pedals as long as the pedal is upright and not pushing backward.
  3. After much practice and confidence building the child pedals.

Video Model is an easy and effective way of teaching skills to kids on the spectrum.

EASY
  • You can create a video in less than 30 minutes.
  • Pick a topic that your child needs to learn, like the alphabet or how-to greet friends.
  • Now, get out your video camera (my favorite for a video modeling projects is a FLIP camera).
  • Be creative, how do you think you may reach your child?  Perhaps by using there favorite toy.
  • It doesn't have to be perfect just high interest for your child to learn.
  • Let your child watch it.
EFFECTIVE
  • What we found out pretty quickly is that Tristan is a visual learner and seeing the pictures over and over help him to master skills.
  • Once a skill was presented in video or picture form kids are more likely to be able to recall the information.
